Collecting art can become a bit of an obsession, and if you’re like me you will begin to feel like you are running out of wall space – but have no fear! There are undoubtedly areas that you can find in your home that you may have never considered to display your visual treasures.
When it comes to hanging art, there really are no rules (that might be debatable, but that’s how I look at it!) Most people want something to go above their couch, but there are so many other places you can show artwork – don’t limit yourself!
For whatever reason, it seems that people are more impressed by large works of art. There is nothing wrong with that, and if you have the space by all means use it to show large work, but you can find some really spectacular small gems if you look, and they deserve to be shown and admired as well. Smaller pieces inspire the viewer to come in close and really investigate the work for a more intimate experience.
These smaller works can be hung in areas that larger works won’t fit or wouldn’t be practical. Here, in no particular order, are 8 unconventional places to display artwork.
- Hallways: Sometimes there are narrow areas between doors in hallways where a smaller work of art could liven up the space. You can even hang more than one piece vertically in that space. They could be related in some way. For instance, they could be similar in subject matter, or style, or colors. Keep some variety among them for an unexpected pop.
- The Kitchen: Kitchens can have wall space that could be a perfect spot for a work of art. Maybe a work of fruits or vegetables would give a new flavor to your kitchen décor.
- The Bathroom: Bathrooms don’t have to just be about towels and mirrors – artwork can have its place there as well. Any theme can go in this room and since most bathrooms are on the smaller side as rooms go, smaller works will go perfectly here.
- Above Windows/Doorways: Have you ever considered that as a spot? Works that are very wide but not tall can fill this space nicely – or a few square works lined up next to each other might work as well. If you have curtains that go above a window this might not be the best spot, but if not it could be just what that area needs. Since it is harder to look closely at works that are hung up high, you will want pieces that have less detail and can be understood from a distance.
- Horizontal Surfaces: Artwork does not have to be shown only on walls - that’s why they make those desk top frames that stand up! You can put any type of artwork you want in those, and it doesn’t just have to be photos of the family. Desks, tables, sideboards, consoles, bookshelves, etc. can all be places to display smaller works of art.
- Your Computer Screen: We spend so much time on our computers, most of them are out on a regular basis. Why not put something beautiful on your background when you’re not actually working on it? You can find digital art made just for this purpose or use digital reproductions of famous works to enliven your workspace.
- Your Phone Wallpaper: Probably used even more than our computers, our phones are looked at multiple times a day. Why not have a beautiful, inspiring image greet you each time to open your phone? These can be changed out frequently to provide some variety. Just like with a computer, some digital art is made just for this purpose. I have started creating a monthly work of art that can be used for phone wallpaper or computer backgrounds. If you would like to get one for free, just follow this link!
- Clothing: Why not wear artwork and keep it with you wherever you go? There are lots of websites that sell artwork printed on shirts, socks, dresses, scarves, etc. These can be fantastic conversation starters!
